A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
